For the discerning writer, there can be some satisfaction that the charm of the hand written note is not completely lost. That statement might seem a little dramatic but in a world where an email can be thumped out quickly on a keyboard and a text rushed together before being sent, the idea of correspondence cards and other old world forms of communication seem an age ago. Recently, elegantly designed cards for correspondence, themed postcards and even illustrated note cards have also returned to popularity. It is, perhaps, a reaction to the drab immediacy of test, emails, and global announcements on the array of social media sites. Even when traveling, a growing army is making entries in leather journals, while discerning business people are using leather personal organisers instead of the electronic versions. Of course, there are always practical needs to be satisfied, making the use of any old style methods more than just a whim. Postcards do what a Facebook post can do, but with a personal touch that Facebook cannot provide. Illustrations that amuse, intrigue and even inspire, such as those of the Cavallini range, can add even more to such a simple form of correspondence. Small cards were once the way in which discreet messages were sent between people of education and distinction. It is a common sight today in period dramas, with a butler carrying a small card on a silver tray to the master of the house. Usually, the message it contained was an invitation or an announcement that the sender would call, something we use text messages for today. But whatever the actual purpose of the message, it was always brief, discreetly delivered and greatly appreciated. What makes that mode of correspondence so attractive today is not just its novelty, but also the quality of the card that the message is received in. The carefully illustrated cards are small, typically measuring just 13cm x 8cm, and can be decorated with intricate floral or geometric designs. The cards can also have feathered sheets, a feature that adds greater character, and which makes its receipt all the more memorable. The message, of course, is the most important aspect, but the announcement, perhaps of a birth or engagement, or invitation to a party to celebrate such occasions, is also made all the more memorable. Perhaps a perfect example of the range of cards and postcards is provided by the Cavallini company. It takes its inspiration in the design and illustration of their products from the late 19th century and early 20th century. Picture postcards depicting not just flora and fauna, but coloured drawings of famed landmarks of New York, London, Paris and other exotic places. In fact, the Cavallini Carte Postale range is certain to have subjects suitable for every occasion, with confectionary for a party, a landmark for news of a journey safely completed, or a bird for an invitation for a weekend in the country, perhaps. Of course, they might also be sent simply because they are intriguing artistic images that are a pleasure to receive. Despite the trappings of the modern world, there is clearly a lasting appreciation for the genuine and the artistic. In many instances, it is the fact that a message is delivered in such an impressive and thoughtfully chosen way that is the source of the appreciation. Understandably, then, correspondence cards are enjoying such a revival, while the thrill of receiving a message directly to ones own phone is beginning to wear thin. And with the beauty and intricacy of the Cavallini selection of postcards, and the charms of life from almost a century ago that it depicts, or the artistic floral designs of Rosehip, AE Marty and William Morris notecards, the ability to impress is undeniable. Even for those less interested in bright and adventurous designs, the sturdy values of those more conservative times are reflected in the range of brown soft leather journals, complete with real leather strap to tie closed. Or for business people and entrepreneurs, the earthy permanence of real leather personal organisers made so expertly by companies like Balmoral and Canterbury. It seems, whatever the walk of life one is in, the remnants of the old world and its value for genuine workmanship, quality and personal touch still lives.
