Since about 2000, consumers have pushed companies to make products that are more environmentally friendly. In response, companies that make printers have gotten rid of their harsh environment labels and replaced them with biodegradable custom labels for the printer. Many other companies have followed suit, by offering consumer goods that are not as bad for the environment as other products. Below is a list of products that companies have attempted to make environmentally friendly and how consumers have responded to each product.
1.The hybrid car. The hybrid car has been met with everything from complete satisfaction to criticism about how it does not go far enough. One thing is for sure, the hybrid car is here to stay as there is a high demand for more efficient cars that will use less gas.
2.Aluminum water bottles came on the scene around 2007 when it was discovered that BPA chemicals found in plastic bottles could be harmful to your health in the long-term. This product benefits those consumers who are worried about their health and those who want to reduce their use of plastic water bottles that are not biodegradable.
3.Reusable grocery bags. As with the aluminum water bottles, the reusable bags have multiple benefits for consumers. The first is they cut down on plastic bags around the home that have to be thrown out and take up space in the trash can (which some people have to pay for to be taken away). Secondly, reusable bags cut down on the amount of plastic being thrown away when it is not biodegradable. Consumers have taken to the idea as they are a low-cost way to help the environment and they offer the convenience of using three reusable bags versus six or seven plastic bags for the same amount of items.
4.Biodegradable chip bags and biodegradable plastic water bottles. These have been met with skepticism from consumers. In fact, only days ago a major chip producing company pulled their biodegradable bags from the shelves as consumers complained they were much too loud. Also, the biodegradable plastic water bottles were met with criticism as being too flimsy and loud as well. This is where companies need to be careful. Consumers know when companies try to put out a sub-par product, which cuts their costs yet still attempts to seem environmentally friendly.
Since companies began putting these environmentally friendly products on the market, they have been keeping up with market research telling them how the average consumer is responding. The interesting thing about these products is people want goods that are more environmentally friendly, yet they are not willing to spend extra money for the products. To summarize, the average consumer will only buy the environmentally friendly product if it is the same price or cheaper as one that is not and if it is just as convenient or more convenient than the one that is not. This research is very interesting and has pushed companies to be more creative with their products to appease both those who want environmentally friendly products and those who want them at a low price. It will be interesting to see how companies cope with this kind of demand over the next few years and whether this demand will continue or not.
